Corella // Caught Up

As a live band, nobody impressed us more last year than Corella who we saw several times bring their catchy indie-pop songs to Yorkshire and various UK festivals. The band from Manchester have an incredible knack for writing a killer chorus and an infectious riff whilst staying credible and current. Brand new single “Caught Up” follows this trend and sets up a big 2018 for the band.

As is very typical of Corella, the song opens with a repeated, jingly riff-line that when performed live, instantly gets the crowd bouncing. The track is driven by a groovy bassline and Joel Smith’s vocals lead the first verse into, what will become, a classic Corella chorus. Caught Up has everything you’d want from a big indie banger, and brings a taste of summer to our ears in late February.

Much like Leeds band Marsicans, Corella pride themselves on their songwriting and their tight harmonies and band performances. No one member ever stands out on a track and on Caught Up, all four of Corella have their moments to shine. The song builds and builds to a huge crescendo and the outro is about as good as I’ve heard so far in 2018. I’m struggling to find too much fault with Caught Up; at times in the past, Corella have been a bit too “wishy-washy” with their recorded music and struggle to replicate their live power in the studio; Caught Up though bucks that trend and finally I feel Corella are reaching their true potential.
