Top 40 Singles of 2017 – 20-1

The second half of our countdown is something that still takes our breath away. 2017 was a simply phenomenal year for music.

20 Legendary Welshly Arms
19 Major System Error Marmozets
18 Close To Your Chest Counterfeit
17 Ceasefire Judas
16 Crying Shame Circa Waves
15 Greedy Soul Liam Gallagher
14 Vampires Frank Carter and the Rattlesnakes
13 Two Heads Lonely the Brave
12 Wired Mallory Knox
11 House on Fire Rise Against

Opening the Top 20 is Welshly Arms, a band you may not have heard of but you’ll have definitely heard the track Legendary. One of the biggest, boldest tracks of the year, this band have so much room to grow in 2018 and take over the music world.

Our great friends JUDAS took their music and song writing to the next level in 2017 – Some People kicked things off wonderfully but Ceasefire is without doubt their best song to date and lit up the main stage at Leeds Festival. If there is one band we tip for major commercial success in the next five years, it’s JUDAS.

10 Holy Mountain Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds
9 Royal Blood Lights Out
8 The Amazons Black Magic
7 Creeper Down Below
6 Nothing But Thieves Amsterdam
5 Rival Bones Hives
4 Deaf Havana Fever
3 You Can Talk Hunter and the Bear
2 Walk on Water 30 Seconds to Mars
1 Run Foo Fighters

And so, to the top ten, which is without doubt one of the strongest Top 10s we’ve had, since we started compiling a Top 40 in 2014.  Whilst big hitters such as Noel Gallagher and Foo Fighters all feature – two bands stand out amongst the well known names – Rival Bones and Hunter and the Bear.

Entering the chart at number five, a catastrophic rise from their positioning in previous years, Rival Bones released the best EP of 2017 of which Hives stood out head and shoulders above the rest. Seeing the band play it live recently for us in York was also phenomenal and we’re still recovering from the bleeding ears we had the next morning. A phenomenal track that has set our favourite band from the North West up very nicely for 2018.

Now, every year we come across a band we’ve never heard before and they always blow us away – this year, that band was Hunter and the Bear. Releasing one of the albums of 2017, Paper Heart, the band released a video for every track on the record, incredible! You Can Talk though was only pipped to the top spot by 30 Seconds to Mars’ return and the song of the decade Run by Foo Fighters. Not a bad achievement for a band releasing their debut album! We simply cannot wait to see this band grow over the coming years, they deserve every bit of success that comes their way and if you have not checked it out – here it is!
