Broken Witt Rebels are a special band. Hailing from Birmingham they have set their sights high and are destined for success. Last year they released the unbelievable “Georgia Pine” a five track EP nothing short of perfection. As you can imagine, when the opportunity to interview lead singer Danny Core came up, it was grabbed with both hands.
How did you and the guys come to be the band you are today?
So me and Luke (Bass) have been friends since nursery growing up through primary school, secondary school and we worked together as decorators. Me and Luke have always been good pals. We met James Tranter about four years ago, he was playing, the guitarist, in a local band and we just really liked his sound and then we recruited James (Dudley) just under two years ago now. Again he was in another band and that’s how that came about.
What kind of artists inspired you to make the style of music you do?
We’re very much inspired by Zeppelin of course, Fleetwood Mac, Peter Green, and we all really like that. Going in to the early stones were always inspired by Sabbath being from Birmingham. We take inspiration from the old sound. We always loved listening to music. Me and Luke never picked up a guitar until we were probably sixteen. My brother brought a cheap one from Argos and I just couldn’t put it down. My first one was from Argos too and I just played it the best I could.
2016 was a massive year for you releasing Georgia Pine, how was that for you?
Yeah it was a crazy year to think back; it got so gratefully received above and beyond our expectations. Playing all the festivals this year Germany France for our music to let us travel, playing on tours is incredible. And then at the end the icing on the cake was winning the best unsigned rockband at the UMAs which was just crazy as well. It’s been a fantastic year.
It’s probably hard to choose, but is there a moment that stands out for you from the year?
I think the highlight was probably playing Isle of Wight festival it was our first proper festival except like pub carparks. It was just that getting on the ferry..and Germany was pretty cool playing. That was good but all in all Isle of Wight was probably the best.
Going back to Georgia Pine, how did you go about the song writing process for this one?
Guns was, its all sort of very much jammed out in the practice room. I do mostly, all the lyrics but its all sort of jammed out from a drum beat or a bassline and its sort of improvised on the spot and I’ll look back on a lyric and, go well I can sort of adapt that to a time from life. Guns from that EP is very much about Birmingham and where the guns were made, the gun quarter so that was a hail to Birmingham where we’re from and where we grew up. You know it’s just screaming to be heard really
And if you had to pick one, what’s your favourite to play live off the new EP?
Yeah I think Low it’s been most time we open up the set with it and it’s just real balls to the wall it knocks you back and I like to feel that kind of reaction the audience gets it’s real in your face foot stomper so I’d say Low.
How was it working with Tom?
Yeah he’s a bit of a legend it’s great to be able to call him our mate. He has some great ideas and really gets in to the recording side. He’s a massive part of what we’re trying to do. Say for instance Low we really wanted to go proper rootsy with it and we were banging chains and hitting beer kegs, recording in a hallway and really getting into the song and he really gets excited by it. From that we also get excited from it so he’s a massive part of our process.
Moving into 2017, you’ve got a pretty hefty schedule, what have you got coming up
Yeah so were finishing off the King King tour our first gigs on the 13th and 14th. Then we jump on tour with Joanne Shaw Taylor she’s a local Birmingham girl she’s doing really well so that’ll be nice. Then we’ve got our own tour with Roadstars which we’re really looking forward to, and an awful lot more, some things we can’t mention but really exciting things a lot of festivals and we’re just looking forward to playing everything and anything. We want to treble the amount; we had a lot of gigs this year couldn’t even give a number, we want to treble that at least.
What’s the on the road scene for you guys, how do you like to tour?
Yeah I mean we’re pretty chilled. We’re not in bed for 10 or anything. We can’t afford big crew and staff and drivers but if the budget is there we like to get a driver which means we can have a drink and stuff. I guess were sick of the time sleeping in vans and getting to venues, we’re too f*****g old for that. If we can we just like to unwind when we can but at the same time not in bed for 10.
How will you find working with Bad Touch on the tour?
Yeah I mean I’ve listened to them once I mean they’re good lads and all that and I wish ’em well. I’ve not heard much of their music I’ve listened to one of their songs but yeah they’re a great band and I’m sure they’ll be nice lads. I wouldn’t say I’m buzzing you know what I mean but at the same time they’re good lads, good luck to ’em.
Any venues you’re looking forward to playing?
Off the top of my head I couldn’t mention many. I loved playing Clitheroe once, I don’t think its on this tour, I didn’t even know where that place was or in this country. When I played it I loved it and it was a lovely venue and I lovefinding gems like that so yeah, there’s areas I haven’t even heard of I look forward to probably the most. And of course Birmingham, playing the academy; I don’t even know if its the big room I hope we f*****g fill it, its a massive room and we’ve never played that at all so it’ll be, thats gonna be a special one I think.
After the tours do you have plans for 2017 to release?
We wanna, we have to really, if we don’t f*****g make an album this year its pointless, its a pointless year. The EP has been incredible but we’ve got so much material probably enough to make two albums but we’ve had a lot of stuff happen with labels and stuff so we’re still talking and making sure we get the right deal. We want to release really, not that we need to because we won that unsigned best rock band, we’re doing okay without it. We want to release an album under a label so its just dotting the Is and crossing the Ts. We’re ready and raring to make an album and release it as soon as. We had a lot of chances and offers at the start that we’ve bounced back and declined. There’s a few in negotiation we just want to make sure our next move is the best move. We’re doing okay without them but at the sad and the same time we need a bit of a backing.
So this time in 2018 where do you want to see the band?
I’d like to say we’ve dipped our feet in America; we’ve done France, Germany I’m sure we’ll touch on more Europe but I’d like to dip our feet in America whatever that means. If everything happens the way we want it to be we’d be talking about the album either the release of and what we’ve got coming up. We’re [just] plotting to be the greatest band in the world but the world doesn’t know yet!
